All moms have super powers. Special needs moms have special super powers. There is a moment when you realize that you are not just a mom anymore; you are advocate, an educator, and an expert at seeing the unseen. Tears of grief, joy, courage, and fear can come in waves; but you wipe them up and keep moving forward. You have special powers in knowing what acronyms such as IEP, ESY, ADL, and BIP mean. There are moments in parenting where you do things you never wanted to do in life and there are moments when you feel such pride knowing you are doing for your child what few can do.
The special needs mom is adept in finding other moms who have children in the non-typical mold and are able to create their own support groups. Rarely will you find another mom who will fight for her children as aggressively and tenaciously as a special needs mom. Even when you want to hold your head down and hide for while, you hold your head up and with confidence because you know that special needs does not limit you or your child, it opens up doors of unique opportunities. Special needs moms truly live by the quote that Albert Einstein said “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
A special needs mom’s super power is ultimately that of seeing, loving, being patient with, and growing with her child in ways that no one else sees.
